NOVA has patented a truly revolutionary high-capacity hydraulic air compressor technology whose value derives from its enabling such compressor to compress large volumes of air that can be stored as part of a grid-scale, long-duration compressed air energy storage system. Such compressor is efficient, reliable and relatively inexpensive to build and operate. It is also easily integrated into hydroelectric facilities.
NOVA’s high volume hydraulically compressed air energy storage technology, called HYCAES®, will enable a promising mode of long-duration energy storage (LDES). In general, LDES capacity is desperately needed to enable the anticipated exponential growth in grid scale use of renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind, solar and nuclear.
While HYCAES® is specifically intended to be incorporated into a specialized hydraulic air compressor (HAC), one primarily designed for use in adiabatic compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) systems, this efficient gas compression technology has numerous other potential applications, such as in hydrogen infrastructure, industrial compressed-air utilities, wastewater treatment, mining, chemical processing and advanced manufacturing.
NOVA’s HYCAES® technology also solves another major problem with conventional CAES technology: i.e., heat management. Conventional CAES relies on relatively inefficient and costly electro-mechanical compressors that create intense heat. This heat is either lost (diabatic) or captured and stored (adiabatic). In the latter case, massive and expensive heat storage units are needed. NOVA’s new HAC technology eliminates the need for such units by using falling water to hydraulically compress air.
